| Hello, my name is Leanne Dean. I began making woodburnt wood plaques about 15 years ago which I personalized for my friends and family as gifts for special occasions such as baby shower gifts, anniversary & wedding gifts...often plaques were personalized for their kitchens or for the front door of their home. With their persistent encouragement, I set up a booth at Front Royal, VA's Andrick's Flea Market where I became known as "The Woodburning Lady" . I did not give myself this name; my client's did! What started out as a hobby & personal gift giving idea, soon became a business venture with clients wanting my plaques from areas near & far. Front Royal, VA is in the Shenandoah Valley... Home of the breathtaking Skyline Drive and "Festival of Leaves" which attracts many out-of-town enthusiasts in the spring, summer & fall...somewhat of a seasonal tourist area. They would visit my flea market booth to place orders for upcoming events; some were new customers & others were repeat customers looking for "The Woodburning Lady" that had visited my booth in the past. These were often custom special order items which were either picked up the following weekend or were mailed to them upon completion. I fondly remember secretively creating an engagement plaque for a groom-to-be while his intended fiancée unknowingly browsed the other flea market booths. It had my well-known "wedding bear" bride & groom on the front--bouquet & all...with a ribbon attached to the front to hold the engagement ring... Of course, the plaque had the wording: "Will you marry me?". It was very touching to see the young man's excitement! He & his fiancée came by to see me later that day...of course she had said "Yes"! They were both thrilled with the plaque. Another touching special order was for a wonderful couple that has a summer home in this area...(I really wish I could recall their names!)...They were celebrating their 30th Wedding Anniversary & wanted a very large (approximately 2 ft x 3 ft) anniversary plaque done. We discussed in detail what they wanted on their plaque & they returned the following weekend to pick it up. This was probably my most intricate of all anniversary designs I had ever done...there was scroll work design columns on a balcony with a detailed rose trellis...the bride and groom (bears) were quite grand; he in his tuxedo & top hat, and she in a intricate lace ruffled gown with the veil. It was absolutely beautiful! The celebrating clients were so thrilled that not only did they very generously tip me, they also brought me photos of the plaque hanging in their home the next time they were in town. I hope to run across these photos to put in my photo gallery. I look forward to creating more beautiful personalized artwork for you! Leanne |
